Here's a sample club letter (to our congressman), who was supported by the League of Off Highway Voters. It's nice now and then to do the positive thing.

October 14, 1996

Congressman John Doolittle
1524 Longworth House Office Building
Washington D.C. 20515

Dear Congressman Doolittle:
The Motherlode Rockcrawlers Four Wheel Drive Club is pleased to see that you are supported by the League of Off Highway Voters. You are also highly thought of in the rest of the motorized recreation sport. We are writing to reassure you that your efforts are appreciated by those of us interested in keeping public lands open to multiple uses by the public.

We are a member of the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs, and many of our members also belong to the United Four Wheel Drive Association , the Blue Ribbon Coalition, and Tread Lightly!. All of these organizations are paying particular attention to the upcoming elections and you have a lot of support in our sport. Our sixteen family club located here in Amador and Calaveras counties feel the following principles should be kept high on your list of priorities: (especially in light of some of the agenda items of the current administration):

  1. Keeping public lands available to the public for multiple uses (motorized and non-motorized)
  2. Being selective in what lands we set aside as Parks or wilderness (these designations are very restrictive and should be applied sparingly). Again, the emphasis on public land should be multiple use
  3. Ensuring that motorized recreationalists have an equal say in the management practices of our public lands (equal to the well funded, small, but vocal "eco" groups).

As a club, we are in our sport for the fun of it. We enjoy the scenery of our beautiful state, and we especially enjoy the "family" feeling we get from a group outing. But we have found ourselves forced to enter into the political world to keep our sport from being suppressed. We are very active with the US Forest Service Adopt-A-Trail program. Our trail is located on the Eldorado National Forest, by Silver Lake, up Highway 88. If you or your staff would like a guided tour of our trail to see what responsible four wheeling is all about, please let us know. We would enjoy giving you a Tread Lightly! but thrilling experience. Please let us know if we may be any assistance to you or provide you with any further information.

Respectfully,
Melissa DeLaney President
