FIELD TRIAL TRAINING

This 10-year old gelding, who spent most of those years by himself in a pasture, was custom trained to be used during AKC pointing dog field trials.   Attributes necessary for a good field trial mount include


  • Tolerance of barking dogs in very close proximity

  • Ability to remain calm around gun fire

  • Tolerance of live birds being released from saddle bags

  • Willingness to ground tie

  • Physically fit conditioning for steep hills

  • Ability to endure many kinds of terrain and weather conditions, including thick sticker bushes, pouring rain, mud and water of varying depths

  • Flexible Temperament

  • Willingness to stand quietly while mounted without the rider holding the reins

  • Ability to pony another horse and to be ponied
