Colorado - 2002
Here begins the 2-week 2002 Colorado adventure. This was mostly RnR - no real wheelin'. The most exciting part of the trip was sliding backwards down Wolf Creek Pass in the snow with 38,000 lbs of motorhome, trailer and Jeep. The trip started with the Dakota Challenge and led to Battlement Mesa (not a tough drive, but pretty), Montrose, Naturita, Ouray, Silverton and Durango. Since this is being written 6 months after the trip (and only a week before Moab!), you'll be spared most of the drivel since I've forgotton a lot of it. So enjoy the photos......

Stopped at the Big Thunder coal mine in Wyoming.
Hmm, I bet this would kick-ass on Hal Johns!

View of the Colorado River Valley from Battlement Mesa trail.

The Uranium Drive-In theater at Naturita.

Blue Mesa Reservoir. Years ago, drove across this when the water was almost lapping at the bottom of the bridge. Now there are rivers wider than this.

Lunch, a hundred feet down on the lake bed.

Near Owl Creek pass in the rain, hail, thunder and snow.

Owl Creek pass in the afternoon from the campground.

Solitude! Only camper at Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

Jeep that had rolled off the trail near Engineer Pass.

D&RGW passenger train and camper, at Silverton.

D&RGW, Silverton.

Molas Lake.

Beginning of the snow on Wolf Creek Pass, mid-September.

More snow. Stopped taking photos after it reached 8" deep and the highway became totally snow covered. At one point, I started sliding backwards with the motorhome on the packed snow. Tasted the seat cushion on that one!

This should surprise no one. I've been there many times before.....

Mendano pass. 12" of snow. Drove up there with the top down and snow falling from the trees into the Jeep. This was an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10!

Entering the Great Sand Dunes National Monument. yeah, right!
So, after the Sand Dunes, meandered the blue highways back to Illinois and am counting the days until the next 'adventure.'
