Moab - 1998 - Jeep Safari Week

So the first day we are out, we're in the Swell. We come upon this Toyota on its side. This is a LONG way from anywhere! A fire nearby was still smouldering. We looked and saw 3 sets of footprints heading west so we tracked them for about 5 miles. We came upon the three teenagers who had slid off the night before and rolled. They were OK but short on water and heading the wrong way. Huntington was about 40 miles west. Highway 6 would have been 10 miles east. We went back, got the Toy upright but it was obvious it was trashed. The engine would turn over a little then bind. They wanted to go back to their camp, about 40 miles away so we hauled them back. They linked up with their friends who had been out all day trying to find them. Another job well done!

Here's Amanda wheelin' in the Swell south of Green River.

We did 10 Mile Canyon with Steve and MaryAnn, Mike and Richard (Dr. Dick). We had a great time. Too bad that this also will be closed soon.

Next we all did the Spike (this was still the week before the Safari). A Unimog almost went over backwards and his spare tire wasn't fastened. All 150 pounds of it went rolling down the hill, right towards my Jeep. At the last minute it hit a rock, barely touched Mike's, bounced over it and down a canyon some 500 feet. Moral of the story: " Tie your stuff down! " It was entertaining watching them retrieve the tire.

Now we started the official Safari and went to Hole in the Rock with Frenchie. On the way down it snowed like hell around Monticello but the next few days were great at our campsite. The last night a storm came up and we got wind, rain and snow. Putting the tents away was a mess, but all in all, on a scale from 1 to 10, this was an 11. We were able to go with Steve and MaryAnn, Dieter and his friends Stephan, Rolf and Benji from Liechtenstein, and Mike. What a good time.

The photo doesn't do it justice. What a neat place - and seemingly a million miles from nowhere!

The high dive on White Knuckle is always fun. This year we saw a person riding a bike doing an " endo " coming down. Fortunately she wasn't hurt.

This wasn't too impressive this year as someone had stacked a ton of rocks at the bottom and we were too lazy to move them.

On to Hell's Revenge. This is what happens when you go up a little hill, it pops out of gear and you don't hit the brakes quick enough.

Seems to me a winch would be easier! The TV crew was filming this and loved it! They even got a shot of Amanda and she was on ESPN.

Metal Masher is always fun. This is where I found out my front drive shaft was a little too short.

What can I say, the Spider is always fun!

This was the last day - we went on our own. We must have gone up and down Wipe-Out at least 6 times while a group of people at the bottom were trying to figure out why they couldn't do it. They did provide entertainment.

And, once again, a good time was had by all, even if I ran out of words (actually I forgot most of the good stuff since I wrote this a year and a half later!)
